Title: Top 10 Questions

1. What makes Shadow Rock so different than other churches?

We are: progressive, innovative, contemporary, friendly, caring, education oriented, community minded, justice seeking, peace making, musical, inclusive, risk taking, and welcoming. We honor other paths to God, don't pretend to have all the answers, and care more about relationships than rules.

2. Is Shadow Rock a Bible-based church?

Yes. Shadow Rock is a theologically progressive community, committed to worshipping, learning, serving, and caring. Our preaching and teaching combines sound biblical scholarship and contemporary knowledge from all disciplines of study. We take the bible seriously, but not literally.

3. If I attend a worship service, will I be singled out or asked to sign up for something?

We welcome visitors, but you choose whether you want to be recognized or not. We encourage participation, whenever you are ready.

4. Is it true that Shadow Rock closes during July?

Yes, Shadow Rock does indeed close completely the month of July. We call it the Shadow Rock Sabbath and it is a break from the normal routine, a time for everyone to relax and re-create, or perhaps visit other churches. We come back in August ready for another great year. In July there is always a minister on call for pastoral emergencies.

5 . Where can my kids go while I attend the worship service?

Children are welcome to attend the worship service and are welcome everywhere adults are. But if your family decides that doesn't work for you, there is childcare for infants to two years in the nursery, Preschool Growing Place for three and four-year-olds, and Growing Place for kids in kindergarten through 2nd grade (all located in the Education Building.) Preschool Growing Place and Growing Place are informal settings for kids to have fun and participate in planned activities. If you so designate, your child can be taken from their Sunday School class directly to Preschool Growing Place or Growing Place.

6. Can anyone receive Communion at Shadow Rock?

Yes! We celebrate Communion the first Sunday of each month and at Shadow Rock the Communion table is open - open to anyone who wishes to participate. In the spirit of community, it is a time to come together to celebrate our oneness. If you prefer not to participate, just remain seated - your participation is whatever you want it to be.

7. How do I learn more about your church without pressure to join?

Let's Find Out is an opportunity to meet with one of our ministers and the membership secretary to learn more about the many facets of Shadow Rock: our history, our theology, our plans for the future, as well as information about the United Church of Christ. Let's Find Out is typically offered twice a month - Sundays after the second worship service or a weekday evening (childcare is available upon request). It is an informal session that anyone is welcome to attend; and there is no pressure to join. In fact, we'll let you know if we think there are other churches you might be interested in! To find out when the next Let's Find Out session is scheduled, check the Sunday Nuggets or the on-line calendar accessible from the home-page.

8. What activities are there for children and youth?

In addition to the Sunday morning programming, preschoolers through fourth graders meet for Rock The World and fifth and sixth graders meet for Alternative Rocks on Wednesday afternoons (4:30-6:30). Junior-high and senior-high youth meet on Sunday evenings. There are many special activities planned throughout the year for children, youth, and the entire Shadow Rock family.

9. Does everyone in your congregation think the same way?

Our experience is Christian and we are part of the United Church of Christ, but each congregation is different and each person is at a different place on their faith journey. We don't require our members to think the same and recognize that our differences can be a gift; and as stated in our covenant, we believe each person is unique and unrepeatable. We are also not afraid to ask questions and readily admit we don't have all the answers. Life is a journey and God is still speaking!

10. Are there other United Church of Christ churches in the Valley?

Yes. Quite a few. Feel free to contact the church office for assistance or go to the United Church of Christ Southwest Conference website www.southwestucc.org or the Still Speaking website www.stillspeaking.com for a "church locator." United Church of Christ churches have individual personalities, vary in size, and utilize a variety of worship styles.
