Welcome to Shadow Rock! Please take your time to explore our website.
You’ll find answers to some of our more frequently asked questions here.
Fun Fact – these photo segments are all taken from full-size pictures found somewhere on the website. Can you find them all?

When are your services?

Our worship service is Sunday at 10:15 am and it’s a hybrid experience, available in-person, via Zoom, and live streamed on YouTube. After a long hiatus from our after worship fellowship time, we’re gathering for “Coffee Chat” once a month.

Spiritual Formation (sometimes we’re old-fashioned and call it Sunday School!) happens at 9:00 am for children and adults. Topics and additional information can be found in our weekly e-newsletter, Rock the Week, or in the Sunday morning worship email.

Visiting a new church can feel really HARD! If it helps, the church staff call talk you through what to expect.

Where are you?

We are located at 12861 N. 8th Avenue. From Thunderbird Road, turn south on 8th Avenue, and head up the hills through the neighborhood. We are at the top of the hill.

What denomination are you?

Shadow Rock is a part of the United Church of Christ, or UCC. This mainline Protestant denomination has about 5,000 churches, and has traditionally been a leader in social issues and justice works.

Are you Open and Affirming?

We voted to become an Open and Affirming congregation of the UCC back in 1999. This designation is for churches who declare themselves to be welcoming to all people, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity.

Are there programs for kids and youth?

Children of all ages are welcome at Shadow Rock. Because we’re a small community, families can expect small, multi-age groups for Sunday morning spiritual formation, with lots of discussion and hands-on activities. Childcare is also available from 9:00 am to 11:30 am for children 3 years and younger.

What accessibility options do you offer?

We are proud to offer world-class hospitality and service by our friendly “Rock-It” volunteers! The Rock-It is our golf cart that gives assistance from the parking lot up to the sanctuary. There is also an elevator to reach the upper level. We offer hearing devices and large print bulletins during worship, as well as childcare for infants through 2nd grade. Please see an usher or contact the church office if you have accessibility concerns.

Do you have communion?

We share together at the One Table on the first Sunday of each month. All are welcome at the table – you do not need to be a member to participate. Most people come forward as directed by the ushers to take communion, but we will serve you in your pew if that is more comfortable. We also have a gluten-free communion station.

Can I have my wedding at Shadow Rock?

Of course! We’re proud of our beautiful facility and would love to share your special day with you. Please visit our Weddings page for more information.

What is the culture of your church?

Good question! As soon as we have an answer, we’ll let you know. Seriously, it’s hard to explain! When we say, “all are welcome here,” we mean it. Some come to church in their “Sunday best,” while others keep it casual. Sometimes we clap along joyfully to our unique songs, others are more traditional hymns. We love to celebrate the milestones in each other’s lives with our Celebrations time and Thinking of You Cards. It’s easiest to just come see for yourself!

Why are you closed in July?

It’s our Shadow Rock Sabbath!  Each July the church closes and there are no worship services. It is an intentional time of rest, renewal, and re-creation. Shadow Rock has been closing in July since our very beginning, and it just works for us. Take time off or visit other churches. There will always be a minister on call for pastoral emergencies that can be reached by calling the main church number (602) 993-0050.

Can I just come and visit once?

Of course you can – we would love to meet you! Please keep in mind that every Sunday at Shadow Rock is a different experience. It might be a good idea to come two or three times to really get to know us.
